Preparing For Sale

On the internet, you will find hundreds of sites with guidelines to prepare your home for sale. In one way or another, they all suggest the seller follow these steps:

  • Thoroughly Clean
  • Declutter Every Room
  • Remove Personal Items To Neutralize The Space (This includes family photos, souvenirs, magnets, and your child’s art work.)
  • Paint Dark-Colored Walls With A More Neutral Color
  • Address Any Neglected Repairs
  • Add Curb Appeal

Many homeowners do not need a list or a reminder to create a beautiful space when they sell their home. They are proud of the thoughtful improvements and creative elements they added. These properties sell quickly in a back-and-forth of multiple offers.

However, some sellers do not have the time or the ability to work on a house. They may be elderly, off-island, busy with work or dealing with family issues. Climbing up a ladder to paint the walls or cleaning out the overgrown flower bed is not on their list of priorities. Fortunately, I absolutely love the thrill of reviving a wonderful home that is more than ready for a new look. As an artist and professional furniture maker, I have skills and plenty of connections with contractors who can handle any job. I never ask my clients to pay for the time that I work on their house, it is an honor to be involved in the revival. The contractors, whether they are electricians, plumbers or masons will have their fees and it is appreciated to be reimbursed for supplies, whether it be paint, caulk, sandpaper or lumber to replace rotted wood on decks and fences. My clients have often said, “ Wow, it’s so beautiful. I can’t believe this is my house. Can I move back in?” It warms my heart to make a space, which holds so many memories for them, to come back to life and look grand again. I am creative and talented, it is a blessing to share my skills and time with people who need a helping hand. As an extra bonus, their updated home gains value and sells for more money. Nice.
